#119 I’ve Dieted So Much, I Don’t Know How to Eat Anymore. Why Can’t I Lose Weight?
What if your weight struggle isn’t about willpower? In this episode, we explore how years of dieting, stress, and labelling foods as “good” or “bad” can lead to cravings, overeating, and feeling out of control around food. The big takeaway: it’s not just about what you eat—it’s about why you eat.

What if the reason you can’t lose weight has nothing to do with needing more willpower? If you keep trying diets but still feel out of control around food, there may be something deeper going on.
In this episode of The Why Can’t I Lose Weight Show?, I speak with Catherine, 53, who has spent decades trying to lose weight.
After years of calorie counting, diet plans and restricting certain foods, Catherine reached a point where she didn’t know what “healthy eating” even looked like anymore.
Foods like cookies, crisps and fresh bread felt impossible to have around. Once she started eating them, she felt like she had to finish them—even when she wasn’t hungry.
But as we dig deeper, it becomes clear that this isn’t simply a lack of discipline.
When food becomes more than food
Throughout Catherine’s life, food and alcohol have played different roles.
During difficult relationships and stressful periods, they became comfort and escape. At other times, they became a reward, a celebration or a way to relax.
At the same time, years of labelling foods as “good,” “bad” or “naughty” created a feeling of restriction. The more forbidden certain foods became, the more powerful they seemed to feel.
This can create a frustrating cycle:
You restrict food. You crave it. You eventually eat it. Then you blame yourself and promise to be stricter tomorrow.
And the cycle starts again.
Maybe you don’t need another diet
Catherine had spent years believing she simply needed to try harder.
But another meal plan or set of food rules wasn’t addressing the reasons she was struggling in the first place.
One of the biggest realisations from our conversation was simple:
It’s not just about what you eat. It’s about why you eat.
If you’re a woman over 40 who has spent years dieting, battling cravings or blaming yourself because you can’t lose weight, this episode may help you look at your relationship with food differently.
Instead of asking, “Why don’t I have enough willpower?” it may be time to ask, “What is actually driving my eating?”
